Man receives five-figure settlement from Celtic over historic boys club abuse claims

A man has received a five-figure settlement from Celtic Football Club after taking legal action regarding abuse he experienced at Celtic Boys Club in 1989. He alleged he was attacked by Frank Cairney, and while Celtic initially denied liability, they have now made an out-of-court payment. The man, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, stated the abuse caused lasting mental trauma, including feelings of shame and confusion, and expressed relief at finally being heard after his initial reports were ignored.

This case follows a previous seven-figure payout by Celtic related to abuse at the youth club, which, while not formally affiliated with the football club, involved convicted paedophiles James Torbett and Frank Cairney. Cairney was jailed in 2019 for sexually abusing boys, and a subsequent hearing confirmed further instances of indecent assault.

Richard Pitts, of Digby Brown Solicitors, highlighted the bittersweet nature of the victory, acknowledging the pain that prompted the legal action while celebrating his client’s perseverance. Celtic FC has been contacted for comment.
