First Lawsuit Filed in Massive Taco Bell Cyclospora Outbreak Hitting Thousands Across US

An Ohio resident has filed the first lawsuit against a Taco Bell franchise operator following a massive Cyclospora outbreak.

Summary

Mohammed R. Ayyad, an Ohio resident, has filed the first lawsuit against Pacific Bells, LLC, a Taco Bell franchise operator, after contracting Cyclospora from meals eaten in North Olmsted. Represented by attorney Bill Marler, the lawsuit seeks to identify the specific source of the parasite and prevent future outbreaks. The illness, which caused severe symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea, is linked to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico.

The outbreak has become one of the largest in US history, with over 5,000 cases reported in Michigan alone and thousands more across at least 34 states, including Ohio, New York, and Illinois. In response to FDA information, Taylor Farms de Mexico has voluntarily removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the US market.

Attorney Bill Marler emphasized that Cyclospora cases are often undercounted and urged affected individuals to seek diagnosis, save receipts, and track symptoms to assist in investigations.
