Bloomsbury, the publisher of the Harry Potter series, is set to receive approximately $19 million from a $1.5 billion copyright settlement between AI startup Anthropic and thousands of authors. The settlement concerns the use of copyrighted works to train Anthropic’s Claude chatbots, and Bloomsbury has 14,087 titles included in the agreement, with a proposed payout of roughly $3,000 per title. The case, initiated in 2024 by novelist Andrea Bartz and two other authors, was deemed by US District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín to provide "meaningful relief" to creators. Anthropic’s deputy general counsel noted that over 91 % of eligible authors and publishers have claimed their share. Bloomsbury also revealed an existing AI licensing arrangement that lets it sell academic works for AI training, offering authors an opt‑in royalty option.
