F1 settles class-action lawsuit over Las Vegas Grand Prix mishap

The Associated Press
Liberty Media agrees to about $3 million to settle a class‑action lawsuit from spectators over a 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix practice crash.

Summary

Formula 1 parent company Liberty Media, which also promotes the Las Vegas Grand Prix, has agreed to a settlement of roughly $3 million to end a class‑action lawsuit filed by spectators who were affected by a practice‑session incident during the inaugural 2023 race. The incident occurred on November 16, 2023, when Carlos Sainz Jr. drove over a water‑valve cover, severely damaging his Ferrari and halting the nine‑minute opening‑night practice. The session did not resume until the early hours of November 17, and fans were removed from the viewing areas before the 90‑minute session could take place. Ticket holders for the practice session or those who purchased three‑night tickets are eligible for compensation, with claims due by August 27. Liberty Media and the Las Vegas Grand Prix did not admit fault, and a final approval hearing is scheduled for November 4 at the U.S. District Court of Nevada.
