Johnson & Johnson Proposes $5.5 Billion Talc Settlement to Resolve U.S. Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits - EconoTimes

Johnson & Johnson proposes a $5.5 billion settlement to resolve most U.S. ovarian cancer lawsuits related to its talc products.

Summary

Johnson & Johnson has proposed a $5.5 billion settlement to resolve approximately 76,000 ovarian cancer claims currently pending in U.S. federal and state courts. The agreement is contingent upon at least 95% of eligible claimants accepting the terms. This settlement aims to conclude over 15 years of litigation and reduce financial uncertainty, following a court ruling that questioned the ability of plaintiffs to establish direct causation between talc products and ovarian cancer.

Under the terms of the proposal, Johnson & Johnson expects to make an initial payment of up to $3 billion in 2027, with no further payments scheduled until 2028. While the company maintains that its talc products are safe and do not contain asbestos, it has chosen this settlement path to avoid prolonged legal costs and uncertainty. The company previously discontinued the global sale of talc-based Johnson’s Baby Powder in 2023 and retains responsibility for these legal liabilities following the spin-off of its consumer health business into Kenvue.
