Buc-ee's mini mart lawsuit prompts John Oliver to keep 'Buc-Off' store open

John Oliver, host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight," has taken a stand against Buc-ee's following the gas station chain's lawsuit against Beaver's Mini Mart in Beavercreek, Ohio. Buc-ee's alleges trademark infringement due to the mini mart's use of a beaver logo. In response, Oliver has created a parody logo and merchandise, dubbed the "Buc-Off," to highlight the absurdity of the legal claim and the lack of consumer confusion between the two businesses.

Oliver has used his platform to criticize Buc-ee's for its history of suing small businesses with cartoon animal logos. During his segment, he noted that the logos are distinct, pointing out that the Buc-ee's mascot wears a hat while the mini mart's beaver does not. He also highlighted that the location, Beavercreek, makes the use of a beaver mascot particularly fitting for local residents.

The movement has gained significant traction, with Oliver reporting that sales from the parody merchandise have raised nearly half a million dollars for Hunger Free America. Additionally, several local businesses in Beavercreek, including Beavercreek Pizza Dive and Beaver-Vu Bowl, have temporarily updated their logos to feature beavers in a show of solidarity with the small business.
