Court approves $4.5 million settlement in flight attendant harassment suit against Calgary-based WestJet

Calgary Herald
A B.C. court has approved a $4.5 million settlement in a class action lawsuit against WestJet regarding workplace harassment.

Summary

The Supreme Court of British Columbia has approved a $4.5 million settlement in a class action lawsuit filed by female flight attendants against WestJet Group. The lawsuit alleges that the airline breached employment contracts by failing to maintain a harassment-free workplace. The settlement applies to current and former female flight attendants who worked for WestJet mainline between April 4, 2014, and Feb. 28, 2021, and did not opt out of the class action. Eligible members could receive roughly $470. WestJet denies the allegations, stating the settlement is mutually agreed upon and that it is committed to strengthening operations and training. The settlement funds will cover legal fees and disbursements, with the remainder distributed to class members. Additionally, WestJet is required to retain an independent third party to conduct a workplace assessment to address harassment prevalence and improve reporting systems.
