TikTok and ByteDance agree to a $400 million settlement over children's privacy violations in the US.

Summary

TikTok and its parent company ByteDance have agreed to pay $400 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in August 2024, which alleged that the companies collected and used personal information from children under 13 without obtaining parental consent, violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Under the settlement, TikTok will pay $300 million immediately, with an additional $100 million contingent on a court terminating an earlier consent order related to TikTok’s predecessor, Musical.ly. The case is linked to a 2019 enforcement action against Musical.ly that resulted in a $5.7 million fine for similar children’s privacy violations.
