Running shoe company On is sued over footwear's allegedly "loud, embarrassing" squeak
Summary
Running shoe company On is being sued by customers who claim their shoes emit “a loud, embarrassing and difficult-to-stop squeaking sound” with each step. The class action lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, alleges the squeak is caused by the company’s CloudTec design, where rubber components rub together. Customers claim they would not have purchased the shoes, which retail between $140 and $180, had they known about the defect.
On, a Swiss company with U.S. offices in Portland, Oregon, has not commented on the ongoing legal matter. Complaints about the noise have also surfaced on online forums like Reddit, with users sharing attempted fixes. The plaintiffs stopped wearing the shoes due to the embarrassment caused by the squeak.
The lawsuit names 11 types of On shoes with CloudTec technology and seeks compensatory, statutory, and punitive damages for potentially “thousands of people” affected. The company allegedly denies returns based on the squeak, classifying it as “normal wear and tear” and excluding it from warranty coverage.
