Lawyers Make $66 Million on Pair of GM V-8 Class-Action Settlements
Summary
General Motors has reached settlements in two class-action lawsuits concerning its 5.3-liter V-8 engines sold between 2011 and 2014 in vehicles like Chevrolet Avalanches, Silverados, and GMC Sierras. Plaintiffs alleged problems with excessive oil consumption due to faulty piston rings, as well as issues with idling and acceleration caused by damaged spark plugs. The settlements will provide affected customers with payouts ranging from $700 to $30,000, depending on the state in which the vehicle was purchased and specific requirements. However, the law firms, DiCello Levitt LLP and Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C., will receive a significantly larger share—over $66 million combined—with $9.4 million from the Oklahoma case and $57 million from the multi-state suit. The Oklahoma lead plaintiff will receive $15,000, while the three plaintiffs in the multi-state case will each receive $30,000.
