Class action lawsuit filed over 'excessive' tolling on new Belle Chasse Bridge
Summary
Plaquemines Parish residents have initiated a class action lawsuit against the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Plenary Belle Chasse, and Kapsch TrafficCom, alleging “excessive” tolls and fees on the new Belle Chasse Bridge. The lawsuit claims that drivers have been charged approximately $5.2 million in tolls and $6.8 million in fees over four months, with 86% of the fees stemming from a $25 administrative fee and a 3% credit card fee. Plaintiffs, including Vic Palazzo who incurred over $1,600 in charges, argue these fees are unreasonable. Governor Jeff Landry recently suspended tolls to renegotiate the system, and lawmakers have requested an investigation. Approximately 32,000 drivers use the bridge daily, with toll rates varying based on GeauxPass account status. The plaintiffs’ attorney, Leo Palazzo, stated the lawsuit is about ensuring fairness and recovering overcharged funds. The $170 million bridge, opened in March after delays resulting in fines for the developer, Plenary, represents the state’s first public-private partnership of this kind.
