Amazon agrees to settle consumer class action over returns

Reuters
Amazon has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging unfair practices regarding refunds and return charges.

Summary

Amazon.com has reached an agreement in principle to settle a nationwide consumer lawsuit accusing the company of unfair and deceptive practices related to its return policies. The lawsuit, filed in 2023, alleged that Amazon failed to issue refunds or improperly recharged customers for timely returned purchases, causing “substantial unjustified monetary losses.” The plaintiffs estimated that millions of consumers may have been affected by these policies. Amazon maintained that customers agreed to the terms of its return policies, including the possibility of being recharged for late returns, and that customers were notified before any recharge occurred.

This settlement follows a recent agreement by Amazon to pay $2.5 billion to settle a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit concerning its Prime subscription service. In both cases, Amazon did not admit any wrongdoing. Details of the return policy settlement will be disclosed in the coming weeks, according to a filing in the federal court in Seattle. The case is *In re: Amazon Return Policy Litigation*.
