Montco woman files for class action after her cat suffocated in a food container
Summary
Valentina Mallozzi of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, has filed a class-action lawsuit against Iris USA, alleging that their airtight pet food containers are defectively designed and pose a suffocation risk to cats. According to the complaint, Mallozzi’s kitten, Ace, became trapped inside a locked Iris container purchased from Amazon and suffocated. The lawsuit claims that the containers’ locking mechanism allows cats to enter and become sealed inside, with the airtight design preventing escape and leading to death within minutes.
The suit alleges that Iris USA knowingly markets a dangerous product, citing numerous reports from pet owners sharing similar tragedies on social media, including the Prevent Pet Suffocation Facebook group. A report by the Center for Pet Safety also highlighted the suffocation risk associated with the containers’ latch mechanism. The complaint seeks to represent all U.S. purchasers of Iris containers and argues that the product should have included a warning label regarding the potential suffocation hazard. Iris USA, a subsidiary of Iris Ohyama, has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
