Class Action Lawsuit Against Chobani Claims Yogurt Includes Toxic Chemicals

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Chobani, alleging false advertising due to the presence of potentially harmful chemicals in their yogurt. The suit, brought by a California resident, claims third-party testing by PlasticList revealed four types of phthalates – chemicals used in plastics linked to adverse health effects like reproductive issues, endocrine disruption, and potentially cancer – in Chobani’s nonfat and whole milk plain Greek yogurts. The lawsuit suggests these chemicals leach from the plastic containers into the yogurt itself. The plaintiff asserts she wouldn’t have purchased the product knowing it contained phthalates and seeks to represent all U.S. residents who purchased the affected yogurts within the legal timeframe.

Chobani disputes the claims, stating they have moved to dismiss the lawsuit as lacking merit and that the court indicated it would dismiss the case in August. The company maintains its products contain only natural ingredients. However, PlasticList’s testing also found phthalates in products from other popular brands, including Ghirardelli, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, and Gerber, suggesting a broader issue with plastic packaging leaching chemicals into food products.
