ST Engineering’s US unit among defendants in UPS plane crash lawsuit
Summary
ST Engineering’s US subsidiary, VT San Antonio Aerospace (VT SAA), is among the defendants in a wrongful death lawsuit filed in Kentucky on December 3rd, concerning the UPS plane crash that occurred in November. The lawsuit alleges that VT SAA was negligent in its maintenance, repair, and operations of the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F aircraft prior to the crash, which resulted in 14 fatalities and 23 injuries. Court documents indicate that VT SAA performed maintenance on the aircraft between September 3rd and October 18th. The suit claims VT SAA failed to exercise reasonable care in aircraft maintenance, contributing to the detachment of the left engine from the wing.
Preliminary investigations by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found the plane crashed shortly after takeoff, hitting a storage yard and buildings. The aircraft was 34 years old and had accumulated nearly 93,000 flight hours. Other defendants in the lawsuit include UPS, UPS Air, Boeing, and General Electric.
ST Engineering stated they will cooperate with the NTSB investigation but will not comment on the pending litigation. Shares of ST Engineering saw a slight increase following the news, closing at S$8.34 on Friday.
