SoCal Edison files lawsuit over Eaton Fire, alleging LA County, other utilities are also to blame
Summary
Southern California Edison (SoCal Edison) has filed lawsuits against Los Angeles County, several water agencies, and Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) related to the devastating Eaton Fire that broke out on January 7, 2025, killing 19 people and destroying thousands of structures. The utility argues that failures by these entities contributed to the fire's severity and could have been mitigated. Specifically, SoCal Edison alleges that LA County agencies were slow to issue evacuation warnings – with some areas receiving alerts hours after the fire began – and that water agencies did not provide sufficient resources to firefighters. They also claim SoCalGas delayed shutting off gas lines, contributing to the blaze.
SoCalGas and Pasadena officials have refuted these claims, asserting that SoCal Edison’s equipment was the cause of the fire and that the utility should take responsibility. LA County declined to comment. SoCal Edison is already facing nearly 1,000 lawsuits from fire victims and the Department of Justice and has offered $42.8 million in settlements through a voluntary compensation program.
While the official cause of the fire remains under investigation, SoCal Edison acknowledges circumstantial evidence points to one of its power lines as a potential ignition source. The company maintains that the legal actions are necessary to examine all contributing factors and support the impacted communities’ recovery.
