Second settlement secured as SIU closes in on R24 million NLC grant to Sascoc
Summary
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is pursuing the recovery of over R24 million from a National Lotteries Commission (NLC) grant awarded to the South Africa Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc). The grant was intended for Rio 2016 Olympic promotional work but was instead paid to the Mshandukani Foundation NPO, which was registered only six months prior to receiving the funds. The SIU has already secured settlements with a media personality (Minnie Dlamini) and an events company (Imbizo Events) for R50,000 and R70,000 respectively.
The investigation reveals that funds were diverted to entities and individuals linked to former NLC officials and associates. Other payments under scrutiny include R15 million to Ironbridge Travel Agency and R3 million to Mosokodi Business Trust. The SIU has obtained a preservation order and frozen assets, including luxury properties and a truck, purchased with the allegedly misappropriated funds.
The SIU has filed a review application seeking to invalidate the NLC grant to Sascoc and recover the full R24.98 million. The NLC has stated its commitment to cooperating with the investigation and respecting its independence, awaiting the final report and recommendations.
