Former Pitt Women’s Basketball Players’ Lawsuit Alleges Abusive Coaching
Summary
Six former University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball players have filed a lawsuit against coach Tory Verdi and the university, alleging abusive coaching methods that extended beyond the bounds of acceptable behavior. Lawyer Keenan D. Holmes stated the allegations go “beyond basketball” and “beyond the bounds of common decency.” The lawsuit claims Verdi attempted to force players into the transfer portal, jeopardizing their scholarships and futures, and made disturbing statements, including telling players he wished to harm himself because of them and making inappropriate comments about their personal lives. The complaint also alleges Verdi divided players by race during practice. Several former players are now receiving mental health support, and some have sought red-shirt years due to mental health concerns. The players, including Favor Ayodele, Raeven Boswell, Isabella Perkins, Jasmine Timmerson, MaKayla Elmore, and Brooklynn Miles, are seeking an acknowledgment of Title IX violations, restoration of their records, and damages. The university has denied the allegations, stating they are “without merit” and will be “vigorously defended.”
