League of Ireland players who have played since 2002 urged to join class action against FIFA, national associations
Summary
Following a 2024 ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) that certain FIFA transfer regulations were illegal, a class action lawsuit has been initiated by “Justice For Players” against FIFA, the Dutch Football Association (KNVB), and other national associations. The CJEU ruled that players who played in the EU or UK between 2002 and the present suffered financial harm due to these regulations, with a study by Compass Lexecon estimating an average loss of 8 percent of career earnings. PFA Ireland is actively urging League of Ireland players who have played since 2002 to participate in the lawsuit, emphasizing that joining will not incur any cost and successful claimants will receive compensation. Eleven European players’ unions are currently backing the action, with further interest expressed by the German union. Separately, the FAI is hosting a discussion on Coach Development for League of Ireland players on March 4th.
