PacifiCorp to Pay $575 Million in Wildfire Settlement With U.S. Government - EconoTimes
Summary
PacifiCorp, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, has reached a $575 million settlement with the U.S. government to resolve claims stemming from six significant wildfires that occurred in Oregon and California. The U.S. Department of Justice alleged that PacifiCorp’s electrical lines negligently caused fires that burned nearly 290,000 acres of federal land. Five of these fires—Archie Creek, Echo Mountain Complex, Slater, South Obenchain, and the 242 Fire—ignited during Labor Day weekend in September 2020, while the McKinney Fire erupted in July 2022.
Federal authorities initially sought over $900 million in damages to cover wildfire suppression costs and natural resource losses. Although PacifiCorp denied liability, the company agreed to the settlement to resolve outstanding claims and improve its financial stability. Ryan Flynn, president of Pacific Power, emphasized the company’s commitment to addressing legitimate claims while maintaining reliable service and fair pricing.
PacifiCorp faces approximately $55 billion in total wildfire claims, primarily from lawsuits filed by Oregon homeowners and businesses alleging negligence during a 2020 windstorm. To bolster its financial standing, the utility is selling assets in Washington state to Portland General Electric for $1.9 billion and is also contesting a wildfire-related class action in Oregon, specifically challenging claims for emotional distress damages.
