Valero Port Arthur Refinery Explosion Prompts $1M Lawsuit Over Worker Safety Negligence - EconoTimes
Summary
Following an explosion at Valero Energy’s Port Arthur, Texas refinery on Monday night, worker Jonathan Jaimes has filed a lawsuit against the company in Jefferson County District Court. The suit seeks over $1 million in damages, claiming Valero failed to properly maintain the facility, resulting in the diesel hydrotreater detonation that rattled homes up to 11 miles away. Jaimes sustained injuries to his back, neck, and spine, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder, despite not being involved in the activities that caused the blast.
Valero described the incident to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as “an unforeseeable release of process fluid” leading to ignition. However, attorneys representing Jaimes, from Arnold & Itkin, contend the explosion was entirely preventable and a direct result of gross negligence and a disregard for worker safety. Lead attorney Kyle Findley stated Valero was aware of the risks but failed to address them.
The lawsuit highlights increasing concerns regarding industrial safety standards at refineries and the accountability of energy companies to their workers and communities. The case is expected to bring greater attention to refinery maintenance practices and workplace safety enforcement within the industry.
