Dallas Wings Practice Facility Faces Lawsuit Threat Over Funding
Summary
A Dallas mortgage lender, Steven Nordseth, has issued a notice of intent to sue the city of Dallas regarding the funding of the Dallas Wings' new $81 million practice facility. Nordseth alleges the city is violating the Texas Constitution by using public funds, including hotel occupancy tax revenue earmarked for the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center and Fair Park, to benefit a private enterprise. He argues the project lacks sufficient public benefit and demands the city halt funding, rescind the original agreement, and explore lower-cost alternatives. The city received the notice but has declined to comment. The Wings also declined to comment. The project, initially planned to open in spring 2026, is now expected to be completed in spring 2027, with its budget increasing by $27 million. Greg Bibb, CEO of the Wings, defended the cost, citing current market conditions and the need to remain competitive in the WNBA, referencing similar investments by other teams like the Los Angeles Sparks and Chicago Sky. Nordseth intends to file a lawsuit if the city doesn't comply within 60 days.
