Archaeological Survey Uncovers Potential French Settlement Sites
Summary
Provincial archaeologists plan to revisit Newfoundland’s south coast to investigate potential French settlement sites dating back to the late 1600s. A survey conducted last fall along the Connaigre Peninsula identified several archaeologically promising locations. While development has impacted some areas with known French presence, the abandoned community of Grole showed the most potential, yielding both 17th-century French artifacts and evidence of pre-contact Indigenous inhabitation. Dawson’s Cove, unexpectedly, also revealed points of interest. Archaeologists from Memorial University will return this season to conduct further exploration at these sites, hoping to uncover more details about the early days of French settlement in the region.
