Class-action lawsuit filed over Alberta voter privacy breach tied to separatist groups

Calgary Herald
A class-action lawsuit has been filed alleging a massive privacy breach involving the personal data of nearly three million Alberta voters.

Summary

A former lawyer has filed a class-action lawsuit in the Court of King’s Bench on behalf of Albertans whose personal information was allegedly breached and shared by a pro-separatist group. The lawsuit names the Government of Alberta, the chief electoral officer, the Centurion Project Ltd., its leader David Parker, and the Republican Party of Alberta as defendants.

The claim alleges that the defendants failed to safeguard sensitive information belonging to nearly three million voters. The Centurion Project reportedly created a public website containing names, addresses, and phone numbers of electors, which was shut down in May following an injunction requested by Elections Alberta. Investigations by Elections Alberta and the RCMP are ongoing to determine how the Centurion Project accessed the voter list.

The lawsuit also seeks to include a subclass for vulnerable individuals, such as victims of domestic violence, peace officers, and healthcare professionals, who may face higher risks due to the data exposure. The Alberta government has stated it is reviewing the statement of claim.
