Kia, Hyundai owners in Ohio eligible for theft protection settlement
Summary
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced a settlement with Kia and Hyundai offering compensation or free anti-theft protection to owners of certain vehicles. The settlement addresses a surge in thefts stemming from a vulnerability exploited through online videos, known as the “Kia Challenge,” demonstrating how easily affected models (primarily 2011-2022) could be stolen with simple tools. Eligible consumers can receive free installation of a zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector or restitution for theft-related expenses incurred on or after April 29, 2025. While Ohio initially did not join the lawsuit filed by other state attorneys general, its residents are still eligible for the settlement benefits. The total cost of the repairs and restitution is estimated to exceed $500 million, with up to $9 million allocated for restitution. This settlement is separate from ongoing litigation by cities like Cleveland, Columbus, and Parma seeking reimbursement for police resources used in investigating the thefts.
