Amazon opens claims for $51 Prime refunds in FTC settlement

Houston Chronicle
Amazon is offering refunds up to $51 to Prime members as part of a $2.5 billion FTC settlement regarding misleading Prime subscriptions.

Summary

Amazon has begun accepting claims for refunds totaling $1.5 billion, impacting roughly 35 million Prime members, as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The settlement addresses concerns that customers were misled into subscribing to Prime memberships and faced difficulties when attempting to cancel. Many eligible members received automatic payments by December 24th. However, those who signed up for Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, and used more than three, but less than ten, Prime benefits within a 12-month period may need to file a claim. The claim window opened on Monday, and customers have until July 21, 2026, to submit their claims. Amazon will review claims within 30 days, and approved refunds will be issued via payment app or mailed check. The FTC settlement stemmed from allegations that Amazon used deceptive enrollment processes, known as “Challenged Enrollment Flows,” making it difficult for customers to cancel their Prime memberships.
