Metropolis agrees to nearly $9 million settlement with Tennessee AG over parking lot issues

Newschannel 5
Metropolis Technologies will pay nearly $9 million to settle complaints regarding overcharging and inaccurate billing in its Tennessee parking lots.

Summary

Metropolis Technologies has reached a nearly $9 million settlement with the Tennessee Attorney General following an investigation into numerous customer complaints. The investigation, launched in late 2023, revealed that Metropolis’s business practices violated the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act, with customers reporting instances of being overcharged and billed for parking when their vehicles were not present at the lots. As part of the agreement, Metropolis will pay $6.5 million to the state, some of which will be used to provide refunds to eligible customers dating back to July 1, 2021. Additionally, Metropolis will establish the “Tennessee Parking Program,” offering $2.25 million in free parking credits ($15 per use, up to twice per driver) in Nashville, Knoxville, and Memphis. The company is also required to improve signage clarity regarding parking prices, enhance customer support, avoid implying government affiliation when collecting fines, refrain from charging for parking sessions under 15 minutes, and refine its license plate reader technology to minimize billing errors.
