Anthem agrees to $12.8 million settlement — here’s who can claim a payment

The Economic Times
Anthem (Elevance Health) has settled a $12.875 million lawsuit over denied mental health and substance use treatment claims, offering potential compensation to eligible customers.

Summary

Anthem, now known as Elevance Health, has reached a $12.875 million settlement in a class action lawsuit concerning denied claims for residential mental health and substance use treatment. The lawsuit alleged that Anthem improperly denied coverage by using overly restrictive criteria to determine medical necessity, a claim Anthem denies but settled to avoid further litigation. Individuals who had claims for residential treatment denied between April 29, 2017, and April 30, 2025, may be eligible for compensation. Claimants must have paid out-of-pocket for treatment initiated within 14 days of the denial and submit documentation to support their claim. Eligible class members will receive either a pro rata share of the reimbursement fund or a minimum payment of $100, depending on the number of valid claims received. The deadline for submitting claim forms is January 20, 2026, and the final approval hearing is scheduled for January 26, 2026. By remaining in the settlement, class members waive their right to independently sue Anthem over the same claims.
